Magnificant trees for Bay Area landscapes

Acer palmatum | Japanese maples are sought after by Landscape Pros—and their clients—for their delicate foliage and their dramatic change of color throughout the growing season and into fall. These easy-to-care-for and elegant trees originate from Japan and eastern China—including eastern Mongolia and Russia.

Many different cultivars of Acer are grown around the world for their large variety of attractive forms, leaf shapes, and spectacular colors.

In their natural habitat, they grow in the understory and prefer part shade—especially in hotter climates. Many of the red, purple-red, black-red, bronze, and some dark green cultivars are generally more tolerant of full sun.
“We love incorporating Acers into our customer’s landscapes because they’re so versatile. They provide impactful visual anchors in both small and large gardens with colors and structures that are stunning year-round.”
Monique Mead | Cobble + Forge

Acer palmatums are great trees to consider for borders and along ornamental paths because the root systems are compact and not invasive. They prefer consistent and regular water. Once established, they are also less prone to damage from drought.

They do well with the addition of mulch away from the trunk and beyond the drip-line of the foliage. Moderate to well-drained soil is best and Acers do not do that well in poorly drained soil.
