Strelitzia reginae is a semi-succulent evergreen perennial that forms clumps of very large, attractive leaves that resemble a small banana tree. From late fall through late spring dramatic orange and blue flowers rise from reed-like, grayish leaf stalks that can reach 6′ tall. These stalks bear beak-like flowers that resemble a bird head profile. This fantastic plant performs best in full sun or part shade in well-draining soil with occasional water. With a very tropical appearance, it’s also quite summer-dry tolerant. Strelitzia reginae makes a great addition to a Bay Area garden to form a dramatic large-leaf, green backdrop. And when it flowers, the distinctive signature flowers just pop with contrast against the smooth, dark green foliage. Individual flowers last about a week and are excellent for cutting and arragin
