ambucus mexicana is an attractive, hardy, and easy to grow CA native tree + shrub. This handsome plant also provides essential food for native CA wildlife. In spring, large clusters of cream-colored flowers appear that attract butterflies, bees and other pollinators. Abundant blue berries follow and provide essential food for birds and other native animals. The distinctive fruit is also edible as long as it is cooked. This fast-growing shrub is tolerant of a variety of conditions but it does best in full sun and well-drained moist, rich soil. While it can grow +30′ tall, it is easily shaped with selective pruning.
