Heteromeles arbutifolia is a beautiful perennial native shrub that is prominent in the coastal sage scrub plant community. It’s a part of drought-adapted chaparral and mixed oak woodland habitats in California. It often grows to about 8′ tall but can reach over 30′. Its leaves are evergreen and in early summer, it produces small white flowers followed by red berry-like fruit that appears in large quantities in the fall through winter. Toyon is easy to grow and likes sun or part shade. It’s also compatible with a wide variety of soils, including clay, sand, and serpentine. If you’re looking for a great privacy barrier, this CA native is an excellent choice to consider.
